Southwest University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education, jointly established with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Chongqing Municipal Government. It is one of the first universities designated as a "Double First Class" institution in China, as well as a participant in the "211 Project" and the "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform.

Southwest University traces its origins back to the establishment of the Chuan Dong Normal School in 1906, which was renamed Sichuan Provincial Education College in 1936. In 1950, it merged with the National Women's Normal College to form Southwest Normal University, and combined with the Southwest Agricultural College, which was formed from the merger of departments like agronomy, horticulture, and agricultural manufacturing, along with the privately founded Xianghui College in 1946. In 1985, these two institutions were renamed Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University, respectively. In 2000, Chongqing Light Industry Vocational University merged into Southwest Normal University, and in 2001, Southwest Agricultural University, Sichuan Animal Husbandry and Veterinary College, and the Citrus Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences were merged to establish a new Southwest Agricultural University. In 2005, Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University merged to form Southwest University. That same year, it was recognized as a key university for national "211 Project" construction. In 2017, the university was selected as a "Double First Class" university.
