Southwest University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education, jointly established with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Chongqing Municipal Government. It is one of the first universities designated as a "Double First Class" institution in China, as well as a participant in the "211 Project" and the "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform. In 1985, these two institutions were renamed Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University, respectively. In 2000, Chongqing Light Industry Vocational University merged into Southwest Normal University, and in 2001, Southwest Agricultural University, Sichuan Animal Husbandry and Veterinary College, and the Citrus Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences were merged to establish a new Southwest Agricultural University. In 2005, Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University merged to form Southwest University. That same year, it was recognized as a key university for national "211 Project" construction. In 2017, the university was selected as a "Double First Class" university. |
